Formatting a thesis correctly is one of the most underestimated challenges in Nigerian postgraduate education. You can conduct excellent research, write clearly, and defend confidently — then face rejection at the School of Postgraduate Studies because your margins are off by half an inch or your citation style doesn’t match your institution’s requirements.

This guide covers the specific formatting requirements for Nigeria’s top universities in 2026. Whether you are at the University of Lagos, the University of Ibadan, ABU Zaria, Covenant University, or any other major institution, use this as your formatting reference from day one.

💡
Before You Start Writing

Download your institution’s official postgraduate handbook from your School of Postgraduate Studies website. This guide gives you a reliable overview — always cross-check the most current version of your university’s regulations.

University of Lagos (UNILAG)

UNILAG’s School of Postgraduate Studies enforces detailed formatting standards across all 12 faculties. Non-compliance is one of the most common reasons for thesis rejection — and corrections require reprinting the entire document.

Required Thesis Structure

  • Title Page — title in capitals, centred and bold, max 15–20 words; no page number printed
  • Certification Page
  • Dedication and Acknowledgements
  • Abstract — max 300 words (Masters); max 350 words (PhD)
  • Table of Contents, Lists of Tables, Lists of Figures
  • Chapter One: Introduction

Page Numbering

  • Preliminary pages: lowercase Roman numerals (i, ii, iii) — title page is page i, number not printed
  • Main body (Chapter One onwards): Arabic numerals, positioned top-right
  • Chapter opening pages: page number at bottom-centre
  • Chapter headings: CHAPTER ONE, CHAPTER TWO — all caps, bold, centred, 14pt

Tables and Figures

  • Number by chapter: Table 3.1, Table 3.2; Figure 4.1, Figure 4.2
  • Table title appears above the table; figure caption appears below
  • Every table and figure must be referenced in the body text before it appears
⚠️
Common UNILAG Rejection Reason

Many students set a standard 1-inch left margin, forgetting UNILAG requires 1.5 inches for binding. This error requires complete reprinting. Set your margins before you type a single word.

Submission

  • Three hard-bound copies plus an electronic PDF submitted to SPGS
  • Hard binding must conform to UNILAG specifications
  • Submit after successful internal and external defence
Federal • Ibadan

University of Ibadan (UI)

UI’s Postgraduate College publishes the University of Ibadan Manual of Style (UIMS) — a bespoke citation format that is mandatory for all postgraduate submissions. Using any other citation style is explicitly not acceptable. The UIMS was last substantially revised in 2023.

The UIMS Citation Style

The UIMS is UI’s own composite simplification of standard style sheets, approved by Senate. Key rules:

  • In-text: (Author Surname, Year, page number for direct quotes)
  • Reference list ordered alphabetically by author surname
  • Book: Surname, Initials. Year. Title. Place: Publisher.
  • Journal: Surname, Initials. Year. Article title. Journal Name volume: pages.
  • Footnotes/endnotes may be used for auxiliary notation — number consecutively per chapter

Binding and Submission

  • Hard green cover — National Green, Colour Code 0-010
  • Title and author’s name in gold lettering on front cover
  • Three hard-bound copies plus two virus-free electronic copies on compact disks
  • One hard copy and one electronic copy deposited in University Library
  • One hard copy sent to the Department; copies to supervisors; one returned to candidate
📗
UI’s Unique Green Binding

UI is one of the few Nigerian universities that specifies an exact cover colour. National Green (Colour Code 0-010) is mandatory — a different shade will result in rejection. Get your binding done by a bookbinder familiar with UI requirements.

Paper WeightMinimum 80 grammes
Body FontTimes New Roman 12pt — universally required
Footnotes/Tables10pt font
Body Spacing1.5 or double (varies — confirm with your SPGS)
Quotes/ReferencesSingle spacing for block quotations and reference entries
Prelim PagesLowercase Roman numerals (i, ii, iii…); title page = page i, not printed
Body PagesArabic numerals (1, 2, 3…) from Chapter One; top-right position
Masters AbstractMaximum 250–300 words
PhD AbstractMaximum 300–350 words

Hard CopiesMinimum three copies (library, department, supervisor)
📋
Standard Five-Chapter Structure

The overwhelming majority of Nigerian postgraduate theses follow a five-chapter structure: Introduction → Literature Review → Research Methodology → Results and Discussion → Summary, Conclusion, and Recommendations. Deviations require explicit approval from your supervisor and department.

SPSS Analysis Requirements in Nigerian University Theses

SPSS is the most widely used data analysis tool across Nigerian postgraduate programmes. Understanding how to present SPSS output correctly is just as important as running the analysis.

⚠️
Never Paste Raw SPSS Output

A very common mistake is copying SPSS tables directly into the thesis. SPSS output has its own formatting that will not meet university standards. Always reproduce results in clean, properly formatted Microsoft Word tables.

Correlation Studies

Report as r(df) = .xx, p = .xxx. Include both the correlation coefficient and the p-value. State whether the result is significant at 0.05 or 0.01 level.

t-Tests

Report as t(df) = x.xx, p = .xxx. For independent samples t-tests, also report means and standard deviations for both groups.

ANOVA

Report as F(df1, df2) = x.xx, p = .xxx. Follow with post-hoc test results (Tukey, Scheffe, etc.) if the F-value is significant.

Regression

Report R², F-statistic, and β coefficients for each predictor. Include a regression table showing unstandardised (B) and standardised (β) coefficients.

Reliability (Cronbach’s α)

Report in the methodology chapter. α ≥ 0.70 is the widely accepted threshold for acceptable reliability in Nigerian theses.

Chi-Square

Report as χ²(df, N) = x.xx, p = .xxx. For 2×2 tables, also report Phi; for larger tables, report Cramer’s V as the effect size.

SPSS Output in Appendices

Some universities — particularly in sciences and health sciences — require raw SPSS output to be included in appendices alongside the clean tables in the main body. Label each appendix clearly (e.g. Appendix A: SPSS Frequency Tables, Appendix B: SPSS Regression Output) and reference them from the relevant chapters.

How We Help Nigerian Postgraduate Students

Navigating the specific requirements of different Nigerian universities takes time and expertise. Our team provides professional thesis support services tailored to each institution’s exact standards — because we know that the University of Ibadan’s UIMS is not the same as UNILAG’s APA requirements, and a thesis formatted for ABU Zaria may need significant restructuring before it is acceptable at Covenant University.

Thesis Formatting

We format and reformat theses to meet the exact requirements of all major Nigerian universities — margins, fonts, pagination, binding specs, and citation styles.

Statistical Analysis

SPSS, STATA, and R analysis support — from data entry and cleaning through to result interpretation and table formatting.

Editing and Proofreading

Chapter-by-chapter editing for academic language, coherence, argument structure, and compliance with your institution’s style requirements.

Reference Formatting

APA, UIMS, Vancouver, IEEE, OSCOLA, Chicago — we format your reference list to your institution’s exact specification.

Need Professional Thesis Support?

Don’t let formatting errors delay your graduation. Our team has worked with students at UNILAG, UI, ABU, OAU, Covenant, UNIBEN, UNN, and more — and we know your institution’s exact requirements.
